Week 15, 2017

Hey folks! Another week and another set of shows, here it is!

4/10/17 - Lisa Prank // Dogbreth // purrer // Pinkwench

I was in a weird mood on Monday but this show pulled me right out of it! Purrer kicker the show off with a short set of slow fuzzed-out grooves that I’m still singing in my head. Seattle’s Dogbreth then sped things up a bit with some super tight n’ positive power-pop followed by Lisa Prank and her one-woman onslaught of rocktacular pop tunes. By the time Pinkwench eventually made it to the stage I was in much better spirits - The healing power of cool tunes and good peeps.

4/12/17 - Bryan Dunaway // Meg B. Banter // James Von Lenz // Kerra Holtgren - The Swedish Fist

I met Bryan Dunaway at the open mics at the old Joe Squared location. Bryan's real good dude with a penchant for both prohibition-era songs as well as classic punk rock n’ roll, and he plays around town all the time. In honor of his 40th birthday, we put together a lineup that was somewhat a tribute to those old open mics. Meg B. Banter, James Von Lenz, and Kerra Holtgren: The Swedish Fist (including yours truly on bass!) hit the mic for a few short sets and to wish Mr. Dunaway a fantastic birthday, and the man of the hour closed out the show with some of his best songs, including the smash hit “Jazz Gypsy Queen"

4/14/17 - Eli August // Wanderlight

Friday featured 2 cello-weilding acts that took turns performing short sets round robin style. First was Wanderlight with a few originals and some cool folked out covers, followed by Eli August and his brand of acoustic smooth-melody.

4/15/17 - Dollars Against Deportations - Maracuyeah // Anexo Social // 83 Cutlass // Medicine Man // Letitia VanSant // Son of Nun

Saturday’s show was a fundraiser to help local barber Serbano Rodriguez. Here’s the copy from the event page about it;

Serbando Rodriguez, like many Central American immigrants, fled violence in his home country Honduras. The owner of a barbershop shop, he was extorted by gangs in Honduras. When he couldn't pay, the gangs beat him up, killed his dog, and threatened to kill him also. He fled the next day and tried to enter U.S. in June of 2012. Caught at the border by immigration, who never interviewed him to explore his fears of violence, Serbando was deported back to Honduras. As soon as he got off the plane, fearing his life, he got on a bus and returned to U.S. Serbando ultimately found a home in Baltimore where he has been working at a successful barbershop in Highlandtown.

The fight to win Serbando Rodriguez's immigration case could take as long as 6 months. We are raising money to fund legal expenses related to Serbando's case and assist his long-time partner, Maria*, with basic living expenses.

We are also raising funds for a community member that has stage 4 ovarian cancer. It has returned after it was once removed. She is a single mother of 3 children and is attempting to get a humanitarian visa for her sister to come and care for her and her kids.

It was a great night with some fantastic performances, and all for a good cause. The place was crazy crowded at one point, and it was awesome seeing so many people want to help someone that they may not have even met yet. It’s stories like these that show how controversial policies directly impact local communities, so seeing the support for these causes on Saturday night was incredible. Alright y'all that's it this week, peace!
