Week 7, 2017

Hey gang! Music at Joe’s returned in full force this past weekend with three killer (and very different) shows, and it felt great to be back behind the faders for all the happenings. From Folksters and fog machines, to crusties and power-violence, I feel like Joe’s really had something for everyone this weekend. So without further babble up front, here’s this week’s Tales from the Pizza Basement...

2/17/17 - James Von Lenz & The Pizza Barons // The Solicitors // To The Moon

Friday’s show was a great way to return to Joe’s after a week off the boards. James Von Lenz kicked off the night’s events, ditching the horseradish and lemon stylings of The Oyster Barons for the pro-cheese and garlic flavor of The Pizza Barons. The band rocked through a great series of original rompers and heartbreakers, and I even got to sing harmonies towards the end of their set. Up next were The Solicitors who returned to Joe’s after about a year away, and this time with CDs! Songwriter/ frontman Jim Hickey and his band played fantastically, and by the time they closed out with their song “Too Soon”, the whole place was singing  along at the top of their lungs. Last but not least were instrumental rockers To The Moon, who transported us to a foggy lunar landscape complete with hazer and twin Orange cabs (shoutout to the band’s impressive merch choices of travel bag and stress astronaut!) After the show my drunk ass found it’s way to Rofo for a sandwich then left it in the fridge for me to discover in the morning, oh what a night!

2/18/17 - Harlan County Kings // Go Dog Go // The Flying Faders

Saturday’s lineup was quite the homage to the classic sounds of old school rock n’ roll. The Harlan County Kings utilized soaring guitar leads and a strong Baltimore accent to kick off the show in what was the best set I’ve seen of them yet. Go Dog Go eventually got setup and threw down with some classic garage rock that felt straight out of The Nuggets box set. Lastly the night ended with The Flying Faders and their razor-sharp take on the reverb drenched sounds of traditional surf music.

2/19/17 - Soft Grip // Open City // Big Mouth

A very late Saturday night which turned into an all day recording session ended with a good old fashioned hardcore show. Local power-vioence collective Soft Grip setup first… lugging their gigantic amps and cabs into the pizza basement so they could throw down for a lightning quick 4 minutes! Philly’s Open City turned the energy up even further with their set, shredding their way through a series of screamers. Locals BIG MOUTH closed out the night with some chunky punk with a twist of positivity to the delight of the Sunday crowd.

That’s it, another killer weekend in the books and another Monday sleeping in. To those of you who actually read this part, I just wanted to take the opportunity to mention that I’ll be playing The Crown on March 22nd with my new band Vorrh, so keep and eye out for updates and if you can make it out I hope to see you there! Alright... next week err’body!
