Week 9, 2017

Ahoy ahoy! I'm back once more with more tales from the pizza basement. So without delay, here’s the scoop from North Avenue.

3/3/17 - Hot Club of Baltimore // Changing Scene // Five Pound Snap // Modern Nomad // Colora

Before heading to Joe’s on Friday, I made my way over to the Gutierrez Studios in Hampden for their open house. Hot Club of Baltimore who provided the atmosphere, as folks scarfed down the free booze and catering. After a few free beers and some chicken skewers with peanut sauce, I made my exit and headed Downsquares for a night of Burger-esqu garage jams. Changing Scene kicked it off with some solid grooves featuring a trumpet playing dude in a poncho before Michigan’s Five Pound Snap took the stage with some fuzzy bass and organ-infused dance punk. Baltimore's Modern Nomad provided some psyched-out indie grooves complete with overhead light show before closing out with now 3-piece Colora and their rapid-fire conclusion to the evening’s garage madness. It was a killer show and I had a blast.

3/5/17 - Erotic Novels // Ex-Girlfriends // Sharkmuffin // Canker Blossom

Sunday is a day for rest, spending time with the family, and for angsty noisy punk. The drummerless Erotic Novels warmed up the crowd with some poppy originals before making way for New York’s Ex-Girlfriends and some flying-v and keyboard powered scream-a-longs. NY’s Sharkmuffin (featuring members of Ex-Girlfriends) was a highlight of the night and banged out a set of loud and heavy before local heroes Canker Blossom closed it out with a firecracker sendup to Satan. Not too bad, not too bad at all.
