Week 2, 2017

Greetings Earthlings! I’m back once again to cover the good, the bad, and the weird as we ran the gamut of style and skill on North Ave. making for a very diverse week in music for me. No need to dawdle so let’s cut to the action!

1/12/17 - Truth Serum // Sunk Heaven // LQHQ // Bodies

Thursday’s no-wave show was quite the interesting experience to say the least. Crunchy noise and industrial rhythms dominated the evening from locals Bodies and Truth Serum, and New Yorkers LGHQ and Sunk Heaven. All the bands were unique, but want to focus a bit on LGHQ. Their performance captivated every single person that was there, it was like watching a Japanese horror movie mixed with a Jordorowsky film - completely odd, strangely beautiful, and absolutely terrifying. The slow methodical movements, ominous soundscapes, and minimal lighting effects were very effective in setting the tone and transforming Joe Squared into a nightmare hellscape. Don’t think I’d exactly jam to it in my car, but it was one of the coolest show’s I’ve seen in a while.

1/13/17 - Gingerwolf // The Dawn Drapes // Mr. Seaweed

One of my favorite lineups to date, Joe’s packed out Friday for a night of killer songwriting and guitar worship I was happy to be a part of. Gingerwolf kicked things off bringing a full band this time and laying down some proggy/ post-rock anthems; guitar lines and lap steels soaring over tight rhythms like a sonic eagle high above time and space itself. VA’s The Dawn Drapes returned for their third performance in the pizza basement and honestly it’s the best they’ve sounded yet. Excellent arrangements reminiscent of My Morning Jacket combined with a sharp lyrical voice and sense for harmony that the audience met with cheers after every song they played. The mythical fish men of Mr. Seaweed closed the show, transforming Joe’s into an aquarium for their cosmic voyage underwater - a journey through the murky depths of psychedelic guitar-rock and reverb drenched drums. Seriously fun night that left me utterly inebriated on whiskey and rock music, and I can’t wait for all three of these bands come back around the way.

1/14/17 - The Streams // Bridge To Divide // Never Hide

Ok… I really don’t know what to say about this one. Metal show for a birthday party. Highlights include Never Hide’s cover of Limp Bizkit’s “Rollin’”, The Streams lead player’s guitar tone (sure, I didn’t need to hear those frequencies anymore anyway, and Bridge To Divide’s cover of “Machine Head” by Bush. Yup.

Alright y’all, see you next week. Peace!
