Week 49, 2016

Sup y’all! For the record, I am in fact not down with the sickness as I’ve been fighting off a wretched cold. Still, we were graced by the presence of some amazing talent this week, and here I am once again to fill you in on the action. So sit back, relax, and get ready for an epic pizza basement journey through time...

12/7/16 - Ryan Teter // Asa Kurland // Veal Kunte // Austin Miller

Wednesday kicked the week off with a lineup of local singer-songwriters and pizza enthusiasts. Veal Kunte started things off with her unique style of scream-pop before making way for local piano legend Ryan “Big Tete” Teter and his Ben Folds meets Beatles inspired pop-rockers. Following the rapid fire key work of Mr. Teter was Now York’s Austin Miller with a set of original acoustic songs before closing the night out with Asa Kurland of the band Slow Lights and his brand of socially-consious looper jams. I can assure you that both food and fun were had by our basement dwelling audience.

12/8/16 - Tail Light Rebellion // Old Bay Thrashers // James Von Lenz // Dan Hanrahan

Thursday was a bit surreal for a couple reasons, but still Joe’s offered a pretty awesome lineup to get drunk & scarf some risotto to. Dan Hanrahan started the show with a set of bilingual nylon-string originals followed by James Von Lenz, who accompanied by sax/ flutist Kin Gravatt performed his unique brand of country-folk numbers and booze-fueled singalongs. Tail Light Rebellion followed things up with their duel one-man-band performance of twangy originals before closing out the night with the high-energy antics of local riffers Old Bay Thrashers.

12/9/16 - Defenders. // The Living Deads // Early American

The amps went to 11 on Friday for an onslaught of riff after double-kick riff as we hosted Defenders. album release party. Early American kicked it off with a set of loud doomers that definitely set the tone for the rest of the night. Denver’s The Living Deads then took the stage for one of the coolest sets of psychobilly freakout music I’ve ever seen, and from what I gathered are some truly serious RV road warriors! Defenders. then closed out the night with their awesome Helmet meets Unsane style of odd-timed sludge tunes. Check out their new album Crisis Averted if you ever need a soundtrack to punch dolphins or bake quiche too. A successful Friday indeed.

12/10/16 - Pride & Shame (Record Release)

Saturday was the debut performance/ cd release show for new band Pride & Shame. It was ok. I was actually shocked with how crowded it was and I didn’t really feel like fighting the masses for better pics, but it was cool to see so many heads Downsquares for the show. The band was kinda like if Lou Reed fronted The Cars while chuckling to themselves and singing songs about irreverence. The robot was cool. The night wrapped early to accommodate bedtimes and I was able to get out of there well before midnight and find literally anything else to do. French onion soup FTW.

All right that’s it. I need some vitamin C and a nap so I’ll catch y’all on the flipside. Seeyas

  1. Thx for the update! The journalistic dish of impartiality started to overheat and burn and crack at the end like an overbaked quiche.
