Week 46, 2016

Hello! This issue marks 24 weeks that I’ve been writing this blog, and I just want to thank the hundreds of bands for rocking out Baltimore and giving me something to write about, as well as the thousands of readers for taking the time to check this out and spread the word. So much awesome music happens in this city all the time, and running sound has helped me discover some of the best new music that I’ve heard all year, this week being no exception! All week Joe’s was host to some killer bands running the gamut of style and genre, and I was happy to have been a small part of the goings on. So without further ado, here’s what went down.

11/14/16 - The Holographic Sticker Club // Reighnbeau // Vayda

The crowd packed into Joe’s on Monday for an awesome lineup of electronic music. Things kicked off with The Holographic Sticker Club who’s return set Downsquares featured a new and impressive light display to accompany his video game inspired dance music. Albuquerque, NM’s Reighnbeau then took the stage for basically the coolest light show we’ve had all year to accompany their dreamy reverb-washed soundscapes. The fog machine setting off the fire alarm was definitely worth it! The night ended with new local band Vayda who also wowed the audience with their huge sound and spaced out light show. I think it’s safe to say this was one of the coolest Monday shows we’ve had yet!

11/16/16 - Pellars // Idle Bloom // Straight Arrows

Wednesday night Joe’s was lucky to host two very different and excellent touring bands. Local act Pellars was gracious enough to open the show with their punk infused electro-pop before making way for Nashville’s Idle Bloom who slowed things down with a heavy set of fuzzed out dream rock. Also joining the festivities was Australia’s Straight Arrows who’s high-speed take on psychedelic garage-rock was some of the best I’ve heard. If you like bands like FIDLAR, King Tuff, and Wavves then I definitely recommend checking these guys out.

11/17/16 - Ragged Lines // Colton Kayser // NIna Gala

Thursday was a low-key night of acoustic music by some awesome songwriters. The night opened with new project Ragged Lines followed by NJ’s Colton Kayser and his set of catchy americana flavored originals. Last but not least was Nina Gala, who’s return set at Joe’s was just as awesome as it was the first time! I really love chill nights like this with easy-going players, it turns my job from work into just having fun hanging with friends. Seriously good times!

11/18/16 - Kelsey Abbott // All Boy/All Girl // Penny Pistolero // Kitten Breath

The lineup on Friday provided a great evening of diverse and eclectic original music that was fun for the whole family! ...as long as you were of legal drinking age and brought your dancing shoes of course. Kelsey Abbott started the show with an acoustic set reminiscent of Mumford & Sons, complete with excellent vocal harmonies and catchy hooks. NY’s All Boy/ All Girl played a set of what I’d almost call progressive jazz meets Coheed & Cambria, with singers Danielle Lovier and Jessie Rogowski owning the stage with their charismatic presence and an obvious passion for their music. Easton, MD’s Penny Pistolero followed with some loud indie-country tunes before closing the night with the fuzzy guitar antics of Kitten Breath and their feline inspired instrumentals.

11/19/16 - Pretty Monsters // in droves // Santa Librada

Things got loud on Saturday as some killer local talent came through to rock out and scarf down some pizza. Pretty Monsters threw down with some sleazy glam numbers that set the stage for the final performance of Baltimore’s own in droves. Unfortunately the band's calling it quits, but not before lighting up the stage with a furious performance of guitar-bass-drum-microphone screaming. Santa Librada ending things with a powerful set of socially conscious rockers that slammed home another great Saturday Downsquares.

11/20/16 - Of Rohan // Portfolio Day // Infinity Knives // 3LON

By the time Sunday rolled around I was exhausted, but the show must go on! Of Rohan started things off with a brief set of slow and dramatic post rock followed by Portfolio Day and their spacey synth arrangements. After the first two bands the night switched gears as solo artist Infinity Knives played an improvised set of super effected guitar numbers before ending the night with 3LON and his falsetto vocals and bass heavy slow jams.

There you have it, we’ve made it through another week! Thanks again for checking out my posts, and as always I’ll try to be back next week to cover the music stuff happening in music places. Seeya!
