Week 44, 2016 - On The Fringe

Howdy folks! This week’s felt like one long recovery period following all of the Halloween madness, but I’m still here to share a bit of what I saw around this clunky town we call Baltimore. From fists and foxes to washtubs and Wait’s, there was all sorts of great stuff to check out this week. Have a look for yourselves!

11/01/16 - Kerra Holtgren “The Swedish Fist” w/ Sparky // Ruby Rose Fox // Manners Manners

Spent All Saint’s Day in the pizza basement hanging with some really great musicians and all around awesome people. The night started with a set by the one and only Kerra Holtgren aka The Swedish Fist, who was accompanied in her return set Downsquares by Sparky Spiridigliozzi for an awesome one-two combination of uke and drums. Ruby Rose Fox from Boston followed up Ms. Fist with her own 2-piece performance of truly amazing and thoughtful piano crooners. If I had to try and describe her voice, the best I’ve come up with is a baritone thick as molasses and as powerful and gritty as a coal train. Manners Manners (filling in for the always excellent Joseph and The Beasts) closed things out with a set of high energy rockers that put a stamp on a successful Tuesday evening.

11/03/16 - Fringe Festival Launch Party w/ Tool Shed

The Charm City Fringe  is an 11-day festival of comedy, theatre, art, music, puppetry, and dance, and their kickoff party for the whole shebang was held Downsquares Thursday night. The event showcased a series of short excerpts from some of the performances that will be held over the course of the festival, including Magnificent Machines & Astonishing Tales - A Steampunk Rock OperaThe Eulogy, and Sharing A Dance With You. Following the theatrical happenings was a set by Baltimore's ever-so-rootsy and always Appalachian Tool Shed, who wrapped things up by brandishing banjos and other assorted lawn tools in order to sing tales of trains, chickens, whiskey, and those ever-prevalent deep elem blues. It’s always nice when some friendly faces can stop by for a night to play a couple tunes, even Dave! (Just kidding my friend, it was great to see ya!)

11/04/16 - Feather Woman Music Video Premiere w/ Voodoo Pharmacology

Friday I went over to the Firehouse Arts & Music gallery and performance center for the premiere of the music video for Voodoo Pharmacology’s song Feather Woman. We were treated to a brief performance by the band prior to the video’s debut, which turned out excellently thanks to the incredible work of artists/ directors Heather Joi and Erik Yount, who then closed out the show with a theatrical performance of their own. I actually have a small role in the video, and it was great to finally see how everything came together after all this time.

11/05/16 - Fringe After Dark w/ Micheala Gran // Tom, Hanks

Saturday at Joe's was one of the many “Fringe After Dark” events happening around the city during Fringe fest. The show opened with a wonderful set of insightful banjo songs by local Micheala Gran, before kicking into a fan favorite performance by Virgina’s Tom, Hanks. There was hootin’. There was hollerin’. There was unabashed references to whiskey and death. It was an all around good time that was perhaps both rootin’ AND tootin’. The drinks (and nachos) continued to flow well into the early hours of the morning, which was made even more absurd thanks to the additional time brought to us by the ending of daylight savings.

Micheala Gran

All right, there you have it! Another week of stuff and things to ponder and reflect upon. Come back next week for more Fringe Festival, as well as whatever else I might find myself writin’ bout. So once again, fare thee well and I’ll catch you on the flip!
