Week 41, 2016

Hello again! This week was BUSY! So many awesome bands came by North Ave. and did some cool music things in front of various audience folk. Without wasting any time, let’s take a trip back to last Wednesday to see where it all began….

10/12/16 - Nina Gala // Milan to Minsk // Dreambush // Copper Marmalade

Wednesday kicked off with an eclectic lineup of mostly local music. Nina Gala started things of with some quirky acoustic numbers before Brooklyn’s self described art-pop quartet Milan to Minsk took the stage. I hate when jazz is super vanilla and improvy, and these guys did quite the opposite! Very cool arrangements built around actual songs (no pandering with cheesy medleys here!) Milan to Minsk’s excellent set was followed by fem-rockers Dreambush, and the synth-shenanagins of Copper Marmalade, who returned to Joe’s for the second time this week to close out the evening.

10/13/16 - The Meer // Castscan! // Reagan Cats // Herschel Hoover

Thursday’s lineup was another diverse collection of local noise-crafters. The Meer returned once again to open things up with their excellent brand of rock and/ or roll before making way for the quirky and highly appreciated nerd rock of DC’s Catscan! Seriously, anyone who covers They Might Be Giants is a friend of mine, and therefore Catscan! rules!!! Following Catscan! was more feline inspired rocking by Baltimore’s own Reagan Cats who did the guitar, bass, drum, thing to the delight of the audience. Herschel Hoover’s noisy 2-piece proto-punk closed things out.

Hey bands, do the right thing! Stick around to the end of the show and support all the acts, especially the ones who booked the show and promoted the event.

10/14/16 - Aerial View // My Silent Bravery // Allison Iraheta & Halo Circus

Friday brought Boston’s My Silent Bravery and Los Angeles’ Allison Iraheta & Halo Circus down to our little pizza basement for a proper night of music and mayhem. Opening with a fantastic set of weird indie songs was local folkels Aerial View, solid drumming mixed with some killer jangely guitar lines. My Silent Bravery then took the stage for some acoustic pop songs about positivity or something like that (It was at this point I started to get drunk off the whiskey in an attempt to help combat my fits of laughter, sometimes things are just silly). The high point of the evening was Allison Iraheta & Halo Circus who threw down a phenomenal set of high energy rockers led by the powerful voice of Ms. Iraheta. I was not familiar with their music, but that didn’t stop quite a few fans from traveling into the depths of our city just to see Allison and her band. The music reminded me of San Antonio’s Nina Diaz, except it was 1000x better and felt infinitely more genuine. Authentic rock music that wasn't up it’s own ass. Ms. Diaz could learn a thing or two from these guys, sorry Nina!

10/15/16 - LaughFinder Podcast

Saturday was my first time running sound for a Dungeons & Dragons gaming session. Baltimore based podcast Laughfinder was behind the wheel for this one and put together a night of stand up comedy before continuing their group’s quest within the world of Pathfinder, which according to Wikipedia "extends and modifies the Revised 3rd edition Dungeons & Dragons game rules under the Open Game License.” It was definitely the weirdest band I’ve worked with to date, 6 vocalists and a DJ. Their song structures were very odd, seemed heavily improvised, and also incorporated elaborate props and lighting into their performance. You can catch Laughfinder on the Thunder Grunt podcast network.

10/16/16 - Carl Gene // Joshua Powell // Ira Wolf // Gingerwolf

I love shows on Sunday! The vibe downstairs usually seems more low-key, and the bands tend to be reasonable folk that are easy to work with. This past Sunday was no exception. We started off with local Gloom-smith Carl Gene who provided an incredible double stacked assault that left the crowd swimming in reverb. So much sound for one man with a guitar! Following Carl's colossal onslaught was Indianapolis’ Joshua Powell who shifted gears with an acoustic set of very thoughtful and insightful original songs. Quite the storyteller in his own right! Also joining us form the road was Nashville’s Ira Wolf who serenaded the small audience with her beautiful vocals and quiet intensity. We wrapped up this incredible week of music with local legend/ hero Gingerwolf who captivated the crowd with his unique instrumental Hawaiian space jazz. Yes indeed, a fine evening with fine folk doing fine things, safe travels to you all!

That’s it and that’s all my friends! Tune in next week for more of the action you’ve come to know and love. To quote the great Arnold Schwarzenegger in regards to starring in a film about Baroque music, “I’ll be Bach.” Seeyas!
