Week 14, 2017

Sup gang! As I write this I’m sitting in my living room watching the new Louis CK special exhausted by this weekend’s run of shows (and another one tonight… but I’ll get to that next week). There’s sooo many shows coming down the pipeline which can definitely wear you out, but I’ll do my best to report back about what I heard. Here’s what went down this week.

4/5/17 - The Stents // The Kurt Baker Combo

Wednesday was the first Stents show at Joe’s this year, and as always they did not disappoint! Banging away at classic after classic, The Stents rocked Downsquares to it’s cheese filled core before making way for Spanish sensations The Kurt Baker Combo and their razor sharp guitar-pop. From bell to bell the energy stayed white hot, much like the ricotta on a fresh flag pizza! ...*see’s self out* Anyway, as always this was another great show involving one of my favorite local bands.

4/7/17 - Small Axe // Hand Grenade Job // LIP // Gauche

Friday was interesting. Small Axe got the crowd to sit on the floor, Hand Grenade Job packed the house with experimental originals, LIP threw down the punk fury, and Gauche closed things out with some jams reminiscent of a Steve Albini project. Fascinating.

4/8/17 - Silent Old Mtns. // The End of America // Joseph & The Beasts

After an afternoon of lunching and loafing, I found my way to Joe’s for an excellent 3 band lineup. Silent Old Mtns. opened with some slow melodic rockers before The End of America hit the stage with some banjo-powered folkers complete with excellent 3 part harmony. Closing it out was Joseph & The Beasts who killed it with their powerful arrangements and dynamic vocal performances.

4/9/17 - The Hive Release Party - Frasier & The Cranes // Val Tambien // Diamond Heist // Pelvis Presley // Slam & Wallace // A Band Called Forever

Sunday was the album release show for The Hive 2017, a compilation of 13 Baltimore artists, 6 of which played on this lineup. Frasier and The Cranes played some uke tunes, Val Tambien played some pretty cool originals backed by a drum machine, Diamond Heist played some beats and got hype, Pelvis Presley sang songs about karaoke, Slam & Wallace defended their title, and A Band Called Forever played their last show. Shout out to The Wu-Tang Clan. Just another Sunday Downsquares I suppose.

Ok I’m out. Next week y’all, peace!
