Week 39, 2016

September has come to a close and we find ourselves continuing ever further into the cold embrace of autumn. Though the leaves may change, the song remains the same as we continue rocking the shit out of the great city of Baltimore! So go tell that idiot from Green Day to get off his ass, and come check out what went down on North Ave this week.

9/28/16 - The Dawn Drapes // Accidental Seabirds // Adjective Animal

Wednesday Joe’s opened up with The Dawn Drapes from Harrisonburg, VA. A killer trio with some psychedelic and really catchy rock tunes that was a great way to kick off the evening. Following our fine VA folks was NJ’s Accidental Seabirds who charmed the audience with their melodic indie stylings before making way for local yokels AdjectiveAnimal who closed it out with some guitar-laden indie pop (really appreciated the coincidence of these two bands sharing a bill together!) Awesome kick-off to this week’s shows, look forward to seeing all these bands again!

9/29/16 - Doomsday Mavericks // Velvet Insane

Thursday, Downsquares hosted Velvet Insane from Sweden. East Baltimore’s Doomsday Mavericks opened things up with some clutchy rockers before our Swedish guests took the stage for some high-octane rock n’ roll paying homage to the late ’80’s Sunset Strip. It was great to be a small part of the band’s kickoff tour in America, and I wish them the best in their future travels!

9/30/16 - Honey Whitlock // The Combs // The Phantom Killers

We got all the punk and power pop we deserved on Friday night! New band Honey Whitlock started things off with some very loud midtempo angst that shook the floor and set the palate for a night of ear-bleeding good times! DC’s The Combs then took the stage for their special brand of high-energy shenanigans, think The Kinks high on Red Bull. The night wrapped up with local support The Phantom Killers and their take on lo-fi highbrow punk music that sent the crowd home happy.

That does it for this week. I was told that BGE was shutting power down around North Ave. on Saturday so Joe’s closed early as a precaution and we postponed the show. As always please tune in next week for more coverage of noisy boxes and shit hit with sticks, seeya!
