Week 36, 2016

…Aaaaaaaand we’re back! Here once again recounting tales of mystery and imagination from The City That Reads. Fish, Titans, Hippies and Gypsies all joined the party this week to help spew forth another fantastic week of rock n’ roll! Check it out!

9/7/16 - Mr. Seaweed // Black Titan // The Heads Are Zeros

Wednesday started a little psychedelic and ended abrasive as shit! Mr. Seaweed started the show with their signature underwater jams and classy fish demeanor. Their set gave me a chance to mess with the lights and try some of the color fades that were programmed into the system, and though I'll need to get in there and mess with the settings so we can get a few more options, it was awesome seeing the lights sync with the music. Shout out to drummer fish for the smoothest mix request ever on his drum reverb. Didn’t see it happen? Exactly. Following the Fish was Mobile, AL’s Black Titan, who’s slow methodical plodding changed the vibe Downsquares from the reef to the reefer. Super heavy riffs accentuated with a melodic sensibility and southern twinge. Following the Alabama dirge to wrap up the evening was locals The Heads Are Zeros, and once the 3-piece grind outfit began they never let up! Punishing blast beats and feedback guitars that kept hairs standing for their entire set. Fuck yeah!

9/8/16 - National Headliner

Patchouli reigned supreme with a different kind of Phish on Thursday night. National Headliner held it down for an evening of bluesy dead jams and washtub bass. Tie dye, mandolin, and monkey feet as the songs extended jammed their way through the night.

9/9/16

A rare Friday off as Joe’s didn’t have a show, but an impromptu house party lead to some awesome jams however, and I managed to remember to snap a couple pics.

9/10/16 - Orchester Prazevica // Novas Trio

Gypsy jazz! It's always a good time when Orchester Prazevica comes around, and this time they brought NYC’s Novas Trio with them. Starting with an acoustic set of Django inspired tunes that perfectly set the mood for a night of drinking and dancing. Novas Trio then took the stage with some very interesting instrumental arrangements lead by vibraphone and electric guitar that was as odd, complex, and beautiful. Orchester then returned to the stage to close out the night, leaving the bar with no choice but to get up and dance to the Slovakian gypsy sound. Another fantastic Saturday within another fantastic weekend!

That’s all to report for now. Another killer weekend preceding what’s shaping up to be another killer week. Until then I bid thee adieu my hombres! *Tips cap and flies away*
