Week 34, 2016 - Going Out West

Sup y’all! It’s been 12 weeks since I’ve started this blog and I would really like to thank everyone who’s taken the time to check it out and for all the great local music that’s given me something to write about. From Annapolis to Green Ridge, this week I was all over the place and so was the tunes! Without wasting any time, here’s what went down...

8/23/16

Headed to Annapolis on Tuesday to go barhopping with a buddy and something unexpectedly awesome happened! We bumped into a friend of ours and she informed us that the band Dawes was playing a brief acoustic set upstairs at Stan & Joe’s, and that there was room for us head in. I wasn’t familiar with the band but they had some incredible harmony and it was a real treat to see a group like that perform with no sound system. After Dawes’s brief performance (and free tequila!), we headed to Rams Head to close the night out jamming to Swampcandy.

8/24/16 - Turtle Tongue

Wednesday Downsquares hosted local band Turtle Tongue. These dudes have some great hard blues rocking’ tunes that resembles a bit of clutch, and even a bit of Red Fang. Super nice guys playing music they obviously love, but holy crap their drummer was LOUD! His Cymbals washed over the band throughout the night and he may have been the loudest drummer we’ve had at the new spot. If Turtle Tongue can reign in the dynamics a bit these guys are going to be a great band that will annihilate audiences all around Baltimore.

8/25/16 - Them Animals // Aüva // Evening River Band // Carpetbagger

Hard rock reigned supreme at Joe Squared Thursday night with a twinge of country music thrown in. Baltimore’s Carpetbagger opened things up with a rather short set of some fast western-infused punk rock. Philadelphia's Evening River Band then took the stage with a sludgy set of doom numbers, followed by Boston’s Aüva who lightened things up with some female-fronted dream pop. Closed out the night with local’s Them Animals and their set of terrific, riffy blues rockers.

8/26/16

Over the last few weeks I’ve been collaborating on some new music with my friend, keyboardist and singer Zinoosh Farbod, for a performance at the LoveLight Yoga & Arts Festival in Darlington, MD. We played a set of what we were calling dark-meditative music in a somewhat contrary fashion the rest of the festival’s hippie-centric lineup. The fest had crystal shops, guided yoga jams, a vegan buffet, meditation classes, and a swimming pool. I'm really happy with the music that we came up with, and I hope to be playing again in the near future. After the show and exploring the odd at both ends of the campsite, I quickly departed the alcohol-free festival for Green Ridge State Forest and the long anticipated Folk N’ Campout.

8/27/16 - Folk N’ Campout 2016

Made it to Green Ridge around 10 Friday night, and in typical camping fashion parroted until dawn. Saturday was spent eating sausage gravy, drinking whiskey, and lazing around in the river before Timm Winslow and Okay Recordings put on a showcase of the musical talent that came to hang in the mountains with everybody. Wes Haines, Cara and Dave from Tool Shed, Ryan Teter, James Von Lenz, Timm Winslow, and myself all performed for the happy campers before the generator decided to give out, but that didn’t stop the music for continuing well into the night. It was a fantastic trip and I want to once again give a bit shout out to Timm and Ambyr for putting everything together!

That’s it for me this week. Next week I’m seeing THE MELVINS!!! so I’m sure I’ll have plenty to cover for you guys. See ya!
